The Mines are the first area you should go to. This is how you start progressing towards getting the main gear!
You start by going right and picking a pickaxe up from the floor. After that, you talk to cole who will tell you what you need to bring him in order to level up your pickaxe. You start progressing down the floors and mine. Once reaching the highest pickaxe tier (Netherite Pickaxe), you can find the Railway Operator npc in the Diamond Mines and complete his quest, allowing you to access The Caves.
Archeologist
The archeologist npc can be found in the Gold Mines. He will give you an Archeological Brush, which allows you to brush Suspicious Stone (Glowing stone blocks). The loottable for suspicious stone is listed below.
